Put it on your calendar: June
5, The Buford 5K Road Race The 2004 Historic Buford 5K Road
Race is now history thanks to several GARS members in helping with
communications support. I received a fax from Joe White the Race Director
thanking GARS for our support again this year. Thanks to John, WB4QDX;
Brian, N4TRB; Charlie, K9CMP; David, KA4KKF; David, KF4ZKN; Bill, WB4WTN for
taking time out of their Saturday morning to help out. Also thanks to Win,
N1TWX; Carl, WB9JSW; Andrea, KG4IUM; and Scott KF4PWI; for volunteering to
come out if we needed additional help. GARS support and public exposure at
events like this help provide for the public service as outlined in the FCC
Rules part 97.1 and promote Amateur Radio.
GARS will participate in this year's Buford 5K Road Race. We have been supporting this project for several years. The date is June 5 the race starts 8am and is completed by 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Six to eight operators are needed with portable/handheld 2M capability (mobile will work) to handle water points, major turns, and the finish area during the event. Operators would need to be in downtown Buford by 7:15 AM and positioned on the course by 7:45 AM. We will plan on using the portable repeater again. Event Tee-Shirts are usually available for volunteers. To ensure correct sizes, names and sizes must be given to the event planners ahead of time.
